Activity Completion: Student Must Submit a File to an Assignment

These steps require that completion tracking be enabled in your course.

NOTE: You can’t automatically check to ensure your student’s uploaded the CORRECT file, but you can require that at least something is submitted before the item is marked as complete.

We strongly advice that you not to use this type of Activity Completion to Restrict Access to an answer key since students can submit an empty file to gain access.

Locate and enter the Assignment activity where you want to require students to make a submission.

If Editing is turned on, click the Edit menu (three vertical dots) and click the Edit Settings option.

Click into the activity or resource and from the secondary navigation click the Settings link.

Expand the Activity completion section.

  • Set Completion tracking to Show activity as complete when conditions are met.
  • Check the Student must make a submission checkbox.
  • If you don’t have a due date set on your assignment, you may wish to enable and set the Expect completed on date. This won’t prevent students from completing work beyond that date but will post a reminder on the Timeline and Calendar found on the Dashboard.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Click the Save and return to course button.
