Add Materials to a Course from an Archive File

Home > Start Of Term Procedure > Start of Term: Copy Course Content > Add Materials to a Course from an Archive File

Take the following steps to Restore materials from a course Archive (a backup file stored locally) into a new course.

NOTE: This process will clear out most other course data (if present). If you don’t want that you can just add bits and pieces to your course via import.

Start on the course page that you want to add material to. In the Actions menu (gear icon), click on Restore

On the Restore page, go to the section named Import a backup file.

Drag and drop the .MBZ archive file in the box. Alternately, you can click on the Choose a file … button to find and select the file

Wait for the file to upload

When the file has finished uploading, click on the Restore button

Next, on the Confirm page, scroll down and click on the Continue button

On the Destination page you will choose where to restore the Archive materials to. Remember, we started this process from the empty course page. That is where the material is going. Scroll down to the section named Restore into this course

  1. Select Delete the contents of this course and then restore
  2. Click on the Continue button below that

You are next taken to the Settings page

NOTE: Include enrolled users option is marked with a red X. This means that students currently enrolled in your course WILL NOT be over-written. Students from the archived course will not be added to the current course

Leave the settings as they are

Click on the Next button

On the next page, under Course settings

All you have to change is current roles and enrollments from no to yes

NOTE: Failing to do this will result in an empty class (no students) however, after some time the system should detect and correct that automatically

Once you’ve done that, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Next button

On the Schema page, scroll all the way down and click on the Perform restore button

On the Complete page, click on Continue

You will be taken to the new course page, with the archived material added to it

That’s it! The archived material is in your course and ready to edit.

Take a minute to check Enrolled users, to make sure current enrollments were not effected by the restore. You will also want to double-check dates for the material just added and update as needed.
