Applying Alt Text to Images in Moodle

Some students use screen readers to access online content. Screen readers do not read images, which makes them inaccessible to learners who rely on those readers.

All other images should have ALT text—descriptive text provided. This will ensure your content is accessible to all students.

NOTE: Review this WebAIM Alternative Text article to learn best practices for adding ALT text to your course content.

Here are a few cases where you do not need to add ALT text to an image:

  • You have captioned your image to describe its content.
  • Your image is redundant to your text content.
  • Your image is a visual representation of graphical data and you have created a data table in addition to your image.
  • Your image is purely decorative.

Click the three vertical dots to the right of the activity or resource.

Select the Edit settings option from the drop-down menu.

NOTE: This step will work for most activities and resources in Moodle. However, if you need to add ALT text to a Moodle Book Chapter, you will need to follow these steps to edit a chapter first.

Click on the image, and click the Insert or edit image button or double-click on the image.

Enter your ALT text in the Describe this image for someone who cannot see it box.

  • Keep the description short; you are limited to 125 characters.
  • Summarize the meaning not the appearance of the image.
  • If the image is redundant or simply for visual interest, check the This image is decorative only box.

Click the Save image button.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save and return to course button.
