Some students use screen readers to access online content. Screen readers do not read images, which makes them inaccessible to learners who rely on those readers.
All other images should have ALT text—descriptive text provided. This will ensure your content is accessible to all students.
NOTE: Review this WebAIM Alternative Text article to learn best practices for adding ALT text to your course content.
Here are a few cases where you do not need to add ALT text to an image:
- You have captioned your image to describe its content.
- Your image is redundant to your text content.
- Your image is a visual representation of graphical data and you have created a data table in addition to your image.
- Your image is purely decorative.
