Change the Format/Layout of your Course

Courses can be formatted so sections are categorized by week, topic or folder in Moodle.

What does this mean?

Courses formatted as topics or weeks can now have content hidden and only made view-able one week at a time. without having to transition entirely to Folder format. This may help keep scrolling to a minimum in very long courses.

We have some documentation for students on how to use different course formatting choices here: Navigating Moodle: Course Layouts

Weekly Format vs Show One Section Per Page

  • Date ranges are links to individual sections of the course.
  • Only Summary content is shown of each section
  • Activity types and counts within each section are listed in grey in the bottom-right of each section.
  • The Summary of General and it’s contents are always displayed above each section’s content.
  • The current section is displayed
  • You can move onto next and past sections with navigation arrows in the corner of the page.
  • You can just between sections quickly with the Jump to… drop-down menu at the bottom of the page. They can also return to theWeekly View of the course by using this menu.

Use Topic or Weekly Format

The default course format in Moodle is weekly– this means that the current week will automatically highlight in Moodle and each section will be headed by a range of dates: Monday – Sunday. If this is undesirable you can opt instead to use topics– Headings default to Topic 1, Topic 2 and so on and can be highlighted manually by the instructor as the content is most relevant.

  1. View the course you wish to change the format of
  2. Locate Actions menu (gear icon) and click the Edit Settings link
  3. Expand the Course Format section
  4. Change the Format drop-down menu to whatever option you prefer: Topics format or Weekly format.

NOTE: There are other formats available but they are not recommended.

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page
  6. Click the Save and display button

Display One Section per Page

This is only applicable to Topic or Weekly formatted courses and is not available for Folder Formatted courses.

Use of this layout choice may require a little extra explanation to students on how to get back to the topic view (where they can see all weeks/topics on one page) of a course (use the Jump to.. drop-down at the bottom of every single-viewed week.)

  1. View the course you wish to change the format of
  2. Locate the Actions menu (gear icon) and click the Edit Settings link
