Assignment Grading: Bulk/Offline

If you want to grade assignment activity work one submission at a time or as its turned you might want to check out our article on Grading Assignment Activities One at a Time/as Work is Submitted.

For the following to work you’ll need to ensure your assignment supports offline grading:

  1. Edit the settings of your chosen assignment activity
  2. Scroll down and expand the Feedback types section
  3. Ensure both Feedback files and  Offline grading worksheet are checked
  4. Scroll to the bottom of this page and save and display so you can jump right into grading.

Offline Grading and Feedback

  1. Enter your Assignment activity
  2. Click the View all submissions button
  3. Near the top of the page is a Grading action drop-down, select Download all Submissions from it.
  4. Save the file when prompted.
  5. Again from the Grading action drop-down,  but this time select Download grading worksheet from it.
  6. Save the file when prompted.
  7. Find the zipped file in your Download folder (or wherever you saved it). Unzip the file.
  8. Open up MS Word and Excel to do your grading:
    Every student’s name will be on their own document- leave the document names as is and apply and save desired in-line feedback.
    Enter their grades in the CSV grading worksheet and save your changes when you’re done.
  9. Select all the feedback files and zip them to a new folder of any name.
  10. Return to the associated Assignment in Moodle
  11. Click the View all submissions button
  12. Near the top of the page is a Grading action drop-down, select Upload multiple feedback files in a zip from it.
  13. Upload the zipped file into the upload box.
  14. Check the confirmation screen and click Confirm that your feedback files are listed
  15. Again from the  Grading action drop-down, select Upload grading worksheet from it.
  16. Upload the spreadsheet file into the upload box.
  17. Check the confirmation screen and click Confirm grades have come through

NOTE: If you get an error on uploading your CSV file to Moodle try:

  1. Downloading the worksheet from Moodle
  2. re-saving the worksheet as a CSV
  3. Then copying your entered grades over before saving it again.
  4. Try uploading the CSV worksheet again.
