Moodlerooms 3.3 Winter 2018 Update

OVERVIEW: This is an update focused on streamlining processes!

  • Bulk modification of completion tracking and deleting quiz questions.
  • Backing up and Restoring a course will now require less setup.
  • Instructors have more control over how course activities/resources display (or don’t) to students and the settings are more transparent.
  • Students and instructors can get quick snapshots of upcoming information on the new Dashboard.

Backup & Restore Process can Preserve Relative Due Dates

In the past, when backing up and restoring your course you’ve had to update all due dates, closing dates, etc. in your course activities. We now have more control over this process and can be more selective about content overwrites, i.e. what to keep in the automated enrollments and courses working in Moodle.

If you follow our suggested Start of term: Backup and Restore process dates, due dates, cut-off dates, open dates, grade-by dates, and more should import and update relative to the start day of the course.

This can be helpful when:

NOTE: As with any automated process, mistakes can happen in the system; so you should always double-check values that differ from one term to another. This will NOT update manually entered dates mentioned in activity/resource descriptions, pages, labels, blocks, etc. Nor will it take holidays and similar into account. 

Use the new Suggested Backup and Restore Process to save time!

Activity Visibility Improvements & “Stealth Mode”

Show and Hide visibility for Resources and Activities has changed! In addition to color and transparency changes to indicate an item not being available to students now, there are labels below sections, activities, and resources, in the Teacher View when hidden or restricted in any way.

This comes with a new feature for stealth activities that are unlisted for students but can still be linked. This is a much easier way to control and fine tune how your course looks through embedded iFrames or links without excessive scrolling.

This can be helpful when:
  • Displaying course content in Label resources that are less bulky or use custom graphics.
  • Embedding a Quiz activity in the last chapter of a Book resource for quick, low-stakes review questions.

NOTE: Whenever linking to another part of a course within Moodle check your links after every backup and restore! Sometimes links point to PAST courses that your students won’t have access to— mind those breadcrumbs! Some activity types handle this transition better than others, such as Label, Page, and Book resources.

How to Change the Visibility of an Activity or Resource

  1. Enter the activity or resource.
  2. Open the Actions menu (gear icon) from the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select the Edit Settings option.
  4. Scroll down to Common Module Settings and expand the section.
  5. Set your desired Availability:
    1. Show on course page: Visible to all
    2. Hide from Students: Students cannot see or access this item or it’s associated files
    3. Make Available but not shown on course page: Not listed but students can still acess item and associated files if directly linked to them.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  7. Click the Save and return to course button to confirm your changes.

The Dashboard’s New Look

If you have a course that utilizes completion tracking students can now, at a glance, see their progress in a course and get timely reminders about activities marked as time sensitive from their dashboard in Moodle (Login to Moodle > User Menu > Dashboard or online.clackamas.edu/my/)

This can be extra helpful for:
  • Warning students ahead of time when items are due.
  • Keeping tabs on grading you as an instructor need to do.
  • Allowing students to see their progress as they work through an online course.

The main feature of the new dashboard is what is called a Course Overview block and it has two tabs:

Courses Tab: Displays Completion

This may be good or bad depending on how you use Completion Tracking as if you only use it for a few items it may not display an accurate percentage of progress through a course’s material. Communicate with your students to explain how you’re using Completion Tracking.

If you don’t use Completion Tracking, no worries– there will be no progress indicator and instead simply a course icon.

Timeline Tab: Upcoming Due-dates

If you use the Moodle Calendar (Assignment due dates, cut-off dates, grade-by dates and similar Moodle tools that utilize dates all automatically feed into this calendar) This dashboard can also show students and instructors relevant, upcoming items in a course.

New Bulk Actions

Both Quiz questions can be deleted in bulk now and Completion tracking is easier than ever to implement with bulk application of settings based on resource or activity type!

This can be extra helpful for:
  • Duplicating a quiz for template use.
  • Quickly emptying an old quiz that has settings you know and trust.
  • Setting up Completion Tracking in your course for the first time.
  • Changing current completion tracking settings for a set of activities.

How to Bulk Edit Completion Tracking in a Course

  1. Enter the course in question that already has completion tracking enabled
  2. Open the Actions menu (gear icon) from the top-right of the page.
  3. Select the Course Completion option.
  4. From the three tabs available near the top of the page click into Bulk edit activity completion
  5. Check off all the activities (or resources) you want to apply a type of completion tracking to
    Stick to one activity type that serves a set purpose at a time such as only selecting quizzes you have to get a passing grade on or assignments you have to turn a file into or forums students must post at least 1 discussion and 2 replies to
  6. Scroll to the top or bottom of the page and click the Edit button
  7. Set the desired completion tracking settings for these activities/resources
  8. Click the Save changes button
  9. Repeat as desired

How to Bulk Delete Questions in a Quiz

  1. Enter the quiz activity
  2. Open the Actions menu (gear icon) from the top-right of the page.
  3. Select the Edit quiz option (NOT Edit Settings)
  4. Locate the question you want to remove
  5. OPTIONAL: Click the magnifying lens icon (Preview question) if you want to double-check the question’s content
  6. Click the Select multiple items button in the top-left corner of the page.
  7. The page will reload with check boxes.
  8. Check all questions you want to remove or click Select all to empty the quiz of questions.
  9. Click the Delete selected button that is located in the top-left corner of the page.
  10. Click the Yes button to confirm.
