Welcome to our weekly BLOG: The Moodle Newdle. We’ll introduce you to some new Moodle features, as well as explore some of those you might have missed or forgotten.
Extended time for quizzes and exams is a common disability-related accommodation that promotes equity. It allows students with documented conditions—such as learning disabilities, ADHD, or chronic health issues—to demonstrate their knowledge without being disadvantaged by slower processing, reading challenges, or attention difficulties. More time can also help students manage fatigue, anxiety, or physical pain during complex assessments.
Specifically, extra time supports students who experience:
- Slower processing speeds – Additional time may be needed to understand complex questions or formulate responses.
- Reading or writing difficulties – Dyslexia or fine-motor impairments can make it harder to read, process, and write within strict time limits.
- Anxiety and focus challenges – Less time pressure can reduce anxiety-related ‘freeze’ responses and allow students with ADHD to refocus when distracted.
- Medical needs – Chronic pain, migraines, or conditions such as diabetes may require a slower pace or short breaks.
- Assistive technology – Navigating screen readers or voice-to-text tools often takes extra time.
You can extend the time for each quiz via an Override, or you can assign the Unlimited Time Role to a specific student(s). Regardless of your approach, we encourage you to reflect on whether a timed quiz is the most effective assessment method and explore the Moodle Quizzes course to review best-practice recommendations and alternative assessment strategies.
