Lesson 5: Objectives
Purpose
The purpose of this lesson is to become familiar with many chemical properties of acids and bases and explain those properties using three conceptual approaches.
Objectives
You have completed this lesson when you can:
1. Describe and use procedures for safely handling acids and bases.
2. Observe, describe, and recognize the properties of acids and bases. Use these properties to experimentally identify acids and bases.
3. Name common binary and ternary acids and bases.
4. Define and describe acids and bases using the Arrhenius concept.
5. Classify electrolytes as acids, bases or salts based on their formulas and the ions formed when they dissociate in water.
6. Describe multiprotism and identify common multiprotic acids from their formulas.
7. Define and describe acids and bases using the Brønsted-Lowry concept.
8. Know the formula for hydronium ion and explain how it is formed.
9. Describe and recognize conjugate pair relationships. Identify the conjugate base of any acid or the conjugate acid of any base.
10. Describe amphoterism.
11. Describe the auto-ionization reaction of water.
12. Define and describe acids and bases using the Lewis concept.
13. Describe how acids and bases are formed from oxides and water.
14. Classify compounds containing H, O, and a third element as acids or bases.
15. Describe the relationship of the H3O+/OH- balance in a solution to the acidity or basicity of that solution.
16. Define pH.
17. Calculate pH from the hydronium ion concentration and vice versa.
18. Use the value and the equation for Kw to calculate either the concentration of hydronium ion or the concentration of hydroxide ion when the other is known.
