Lesson 7: Objectives

PURPOSE:

Generally, to understand and explain why atoms combine with one another to form the vast array of chemical substances that exist.  Specifically, to become familiar with ionic bonding, with ionic nomenclature, and with network materials.

OBJECTIVES:  You have completed this lesson when you can:

Ionic Bonding

1. Describe the nature of ionic bonding and explain why it results in the formation of networks and compounds, but not elements and not molecules.

2. Use the periodic table, our current atomic model and the octet rule to determine the charges (oxidation states) of ions formed by the representative metals and nonmetals.

3. Use lists to determine the charges (oxidation states) for the ions of multivalent metals.

4. Use the charges of cations and anions to determine the formulas of ionic compounds.

Ionic Nomenclature

5.  Name cations, anions and ionic compounds using simple, Latin and Stock names as appropriate.

6. Name and write formulas for common polyatomic ions and compounds that include them.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Outside Reading (optional): Find and read the portions of your text that cover these topics: ionic bonding and nomenclature
