Activity Completion: Student Must Submit a File to an Assignment

These steps require that completion tracking be enabled in your course.

A common activity in Moodle is to have students submit a file or text to an assignment. You can set up Activity Completion to mark a forum as complete if the student makes a submission.

NOTE: You can’t automatically check to ensure your student’s uploaded the CORRECT file, but you can require that at least something is submitted before the item is marked as complete.

We strongly advice that you not to use this type of Activity Completion to Restrict Access to an answer key since students can submit an empty file to gain access.

Locate the Assignment activity where you want students to make a submission.

If Editing is turned on, click the Edit menu (three vertical dots) and click the Edit Settings option.

OR

Click into the activity or resource and from the secondary navigation click the Settings link.

Expand the Completion conditions section.

Select the Add requirements option.

Check Make a submission.

NOTE: This requires the student submit the assignment, but it does not verify the submission is complete or valid.

If you have a due date set on your assignment do not enable the Set reminder in Timeline date. Doing both will result in a duplicate reminder to students on both the Timeline and the Calendar located on the Dashboard.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Click the Save and return to course button.

With Edit mode turned on you can select Edit conditions from the Completion drop-down to modify these settings at a later date.
