Moodle Book Resource

The Moodle Book is similar to an e-book and—unlike a standard PDF or Word document—is designed to be accessible for all users, regardless of disabilities, devices, or screen sizes. The multi-page resource is compact and easily navigable via its table of contents.

A Moodle Book allows you to create a multi-page resource in an e-book format with a table of contents. Multimedia and interactive content can be embedded in the Book, which may be printed in its entirety or by chapter.

Enter your course and turn Edit mode on.

Turn Editing On button is found in the top-right corner of a Moodle page you have permission to modify content for.

Scroll to the section where you want to add a Book.

Click the corresponding Add an activity or resource link.

Select Book from the Activity Chooser.

Complete the General Section:

  • Enter a unique Name. This is how the book will appear on the course main page and in the course index.
  • OPTIONAL: Enter a succinct Description, since the description will appear at the top of each chapter. Or, you may choose to include instructions on how you navigate the book in this section.

Complete the Appearance section:

  • Chapter formatting: defines how the chapter and subchapter titles are formatted.
    • None – chapter and subchapter titles are not formatted at all. This allows you to define a special numbering style.
    • Numbers – chapters and subchapters are numbered (1, 1.1, 1.2, 2, …)
    • Bullets – chapters and subchapters are displayed with bullets in the table of contents.
    • Indented – subchapters are indented in the table of contents.
  • Custom titles: differentiate the title at the top of each chapter from what appears in the table of contents.

Click the Save and display button.

Add the first chapter to your book:

Enter a Chapter title: Use a short, but descriptive title for your chapter. This will appear as a link in the table of contents.

Enter Content: You can add formatted text, media, url links, and H5P content via the text editor to the chapters of your book.

NOTE: If you only want one chapter, we recommend you use a Page Resource instead.

You can easily import Word documents into your Moodle Book. Headings and subheadings—if tagged properly in your original Word document—will automatically convert to chapters and subchapters. Formatting can be lost in the import process, so preview your book after the import is completed.

Click the Book link where you want to import the Word document.

Select the Import from Microsoft Word option from the secondary navigation.

Drag and drop your Word document into the dashed box…

or click the Choose a file… button and select the Word document to import.

NOTE: If you are using subheadings in your document, select the Create subchapters based on subheadings checkbox.

Click the Import button.

Click the Continue button.

Some Word formatting may not come over properly in the import process, so preview and edit your book as needed.

You may want to reorganize or remove some of the chapters of your Moodle book. This process requires using the Table of Contents.

NOTE: Enable Edit mode and open the Block drawer to access the Table of Contents.

Here are some ways you can organize the chapters in your book:

Create a Subchapter

The book module allows you to have main chapters and sub chapters. The chapter formatting that you selected in the Appearance section when you created the book will determine how your Chapters and Subchapters will appear in the Table of Contents.

To change a chapter to a subchapter:

  1. In the table of contents click on the gear icon next to the chapter you want edit.
  2. Select the Subchapter checkbox.
  3. Click the Save changes button.
Move Chapters

You can move the chapters up and down to change the order of the chapters in your book.

To move a chapter up/down:

  1. In the table of contents click up or down arrow next to the chapter you want to move.
  2. Repeat this process till you get the chapter in the correct location.
Hide/Delete Chapters

You may have chapters you do not want students to access. To keep the chapter in the book, but to not have available to students you can hide it. If you no longer want to have the chapter you can delete it.

To hide/delete a chapter:

  • In the table of contents click the eye icon next to the chapter you want to hide.
  • In the table of contents click the trash can icon next to the chapter you want to delete.
