Display Letter Grades

You can choose to display a letter grade for the course and/or category total in the gradebook for both your students and yourself.

Scroll to the top of the main page of your course.

Select the Grades option from the secondary navigation.

Select the Gradebook Setup option from the drop-down menu.

Locate the Category or Course total you wish to display as a letter grade.

Click the edit menu and select Edit Settings from the options.

Expand the Category total section and click the Show more… link

Change the value of Grade display type to in an option that includes at least a mention of Letter

NOTE: you can display more than one value, the default is Real (Percent) which will display their point score followed by the earned percent in parenthesis like 259 (70%) in a Natural gradebook with a maximum point value of 370.

Click the Save changes button.

Click the Continue button.

Change Percent Range for Letter Grades

The default percent range for Letter Grades is as follows:

  • 90-100% – A
  • 80-89.99% – B
  • 70-79.99% – C
  • 60-69.99% – D
  • 0 – 59.99% – F

If you wish to display letter grades in Moodle and your syllabus percent range differs from the default you will need to follow these steps to modify.

Scroll to the top of the main page of your course.

Select the Grades option from the secondary navigation

Select the Grade letters option from the drop-down menu.

Click the Edit button if these values don’t match your Syllabus.

Check the Override site defaults check-box.

Change the value in the second column to the new minimum percentage.

NOTE: For example I modified D to be awarded to students that grade percentage is not lower than 65% (65.00000).  It was previously set to 60% (60.00000).

Click the Save changes button.

Confirm your changes match the intended ranges in your syllabus.
