You can change the course total or a category total to display letter grades in the gradebook.

Scroll to the top of the main page of your course (if you aren’t there already).
Select the Grades option from the Secondary Navigation.
Select the Gradebook Setup option from the Tertiary Navigation.
Locate the Category or Course total you wish to display as a letter grade.
Click the edit menu and select Edit Settings from the options.
Expand the Category total section and click the Show more… link
Change the value of Grade display type to in an option that includes at least a mention of Letter
NOTE: you can display more than one value, the default as of Spring Term 2016 is Real (Percent) which will display their point score followed by the earned percent in parenthesis like 259 (70%) in a Natural gradebook with a maximum point value of 370.
Scroll to the bottom of this page.
Click the Save changes button.
Scroll to the top (if you aren’t there already).
Select the Grades option from the Secondary Navigation.
Select the Grade letters option from the Tertiary Navigation.
Click the Edit button to change these values if they don’t match those in your Syllabus.
Check the Override site defaults check-box to the enabled editing on this page.
Change the number value in the second columns to the new low range.
NOTE: in this case I modified D to not include anything lower than 65% (65.00000) to match my syllabus. It was previously set to 60% (60.00000).
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
Click the Save changes button.
