Restrict Access: Must Belong to Group

You can prevent access to an activity, resources, or section based on the group that a student belongs to. This can be helpful if you want to allow certain students to access a specific resource, activity or section that others do not need to access. This can be helpful when courses have been cross-listed or when you have student accommodations which require students to have access to different items in the course.

NOTE: You must first enable and create groups to use this type of restriction.

Locate the activity, resource, or section/topic in your course that you want to ONLY be available after a student has completed a select activity.

If Edit mode is on, click the Edit menu (three vertical dots), then select the Edit Settings or Edit Section option.

OR

Click into the activity or resource and then click Settings from the secondary navigation

Scroll down to and expand the Restrict Access section.

Click the Add restriction button.

From the popup list, select the Group option.

Ensure that Access restrictions are set to:

  • Student must match the following.
  • Select the group of the students you want to have access from the drop-down list.
  • Ensure Eye icon is closed—Hidden entirely if student doesn’t meet this condition—so only the students that have access can see the resource, activity or section.

Scroll to the bottom of the page.

Click the Save and return to course button.

When restrict access is applied, you should see the activity greyed out with a note to students as to what needs to be done first.
