Restrict Access is a Moodle plugin that can be applied to Resources, Activities and Sections to limit access based on group, completion tracking, date/time, and more.
Many activities like Quizzes and Assignments have built-in Open and Close settings, but for resource or activities that do not have these settings you can use Restrict Access to apply open and close dates to a resource or activity.
NOTE: Activities that are hidden from the student will not show in the gradebook. This can make the grades students view incorrect. Restrict access with the eye open will prevent students from viewing the details or completing the activity beyond that date, but they can view grades and feedback provided for the activity within the gradebook.
If you have completion tracking enabled in your course you can restrict access based on activity completion. This can be useful for enforcing an order of completion or to ensure students show a level of competency before being able to move on to the next item. Some examples of this include making sure that students view a resource, submit a file, posts to a forum, or receive a passing grade on a quiz before being allowed to move on.
If you have groups enabled you can restrict access to an activity based on the group the student belongs to. This can be helpful if you do not want all students in the course to access a specific resource or activity. Some examples of this would be when you have classes cross-listed or students with accommodations that need access to different resources and activities.
Be aware that items that are completely hidden from students will not be included in the grades students see. This may cause the grades the see to not match what you see in the grader report. To make sure that students grades are accurate it is important to make sure the proper visibility settings are used for activities that are used in grade calculations.
If the visibility setting for an item with restrict access is set to show students will be able to see their grade and gradebook feedback but will not be able to enter the activity to look at content, work, or inline/file feedback.
If using more than one restriction with restrict access make sure you check with students that items are available when you think they are and that they do not conflict.
