Setting up an Incomplete Course

Home > End Of Term Checklist > Setting up an Incomplete Course

At the end of each term, your course will automatically hide on the Course end date listed in Moodle. However, if you have a student who has received an incomplete, you may want that student to have access to the hidden course to complete the outstanding work.

Instead of making the course visible to all students, OLET suggests you assign the incomplete role to the student to view/access the hidden course. Once the student has completed the work you can remove the incomplete role.

NOTE: Check with your department chair or handbook for incomplete policies as they differ from department to department.

To allow any student to access a course after the Course end date, you need to assign them to the incomplete role. This will allow the student to access the hidden course from their My courses page.

NOTE: Students may need to change their Course overview filter to Past in order to see the course.

Once the term is officially over, verify that your course is hidden.

Scroll to the top of the main page of your course.

Select the Participants option from the secondary navigation.

Click the pencil icon under Roles for the student you want to assign an incomplete.

Select the Incomplete option from the drop-down menu.

Click the disk icon to save.

NOTE: The student should have both the student role and the incomplete role.

Extend the due dates for any assignments or quizzes you allow the student to complete.

The course should now be available on the student’s My courses page.

When the student has completed the outstanding work, remove the assigned incomplete role to prevent the student from continued access to the course.

Scroll to the top of the main page of your course.

Select the Participants option from the secondary navigation.

Click the pencil icon under Roles for the student who no longer needs the incomplete role.

Click next to the Incomplete role.

Click the disk icon to save.

With only the student role assigned, the course is no longer available to the student.
