A workspace is an area where you can create, modify, and delete Moodle courses. You can use the workspace to experiment with Moodle Activities and Resources, develop a future course, restore a past course, share course resources between courses, etc.
Get a Workspace
Workspaces are not automatically created, so you will need to submit a ticket to OLET. Please provide us with your division and department so we can categorize the workspace properly. Once your workspace is ready, we will email you a link to your workspace to include an empty sandbox course. We recommend that you Favorite/Bookmark these pages in your browser for future reference.
Find your Workspace
If you did not bookmark your workspace when it was created, you can find your workspace in Moodle with a quick search of your name. If that method does not work, you can manually search for your division and department.
If you still can’t find your workspace, submit a ticket to OLET and we can create one for you.
You will need a faculty workspace for this process. If you can’t find your faculty workspace or do not have one, please submit a ticket to OLET.
Log into Moodle and click the My courses option on the red bar.
Click the Create course button.
Complete the following requirements:
- Course full name – Displays at the top of the course.
- Course short name – Please follow our course naming conventions to make it easier to search for your course in the future.
- Course category – This should automatically select your faculty workspace.
We recommend that you complete the following settings:
- Course visibility – Set to hide unless you intend to have students access the course.
- Course start date and end date – If creating a DEV course or INCOMPLETE, set these to reflect the proper dates of the course. This will make it so the course imports and adjusts dates properly.
NOTE: Deselect Calculate the end date from the number of sections if you want to set a specific course end date.
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
Click the Save and display button.
You are now ready to use the course. Here are some tasks you may want to complete.
Your Moodle Workspace is the only place where you can remove courses. If you no longer need access to a course in your workspace, we recommend you archive the course and delete it from Moodle.
Log into Moodle and navigate to your Moodle workspace.
Click the grey More button.
Select the Manage Courses option.
Locate the course you want to delete in the second column.
Click the trash bin icon to the right of the course you want to delete.
Confirm that you have targeted the correct course for deletion.
Click the Delete button when you’re sure.
Scroll to the bottom of the page.
Click the Continue button.
Repeat the process for each course you want to delete.
NOTE: Be patient this process takes some time.
Uses for your workspace:
- to restore course archives back into Moodle.
- create a shared course repository to be accessed by multiple classes. Use a meta-course enrollment to enroll the students in the other classes into your shared course repository.
- create a Moodle course that is intended for faculty and staff collaboration instead of instruction. You can manually enroll users into the course. If the list of users you need enrolled is large submit a ticket to OLET for assistance.
