Quiz Activity (Exam or Test)

Working with Quizzes in Moodle

Quizzes are one of the common assessment activities used in Moodle. Quizzes can meet many teaching needs, from simple, multiple-choice knowledge tests to complex, self-assessment tasks with detailed feedback.

It is best to create questions in a Question bank so they can be used within multiple quizzes.

We recommend you create a question bank category and questions within the category before you create the quiz.

NOTE: If you have questions from a book publisher or another course you may be able to import the questions into the question bank instead of creating each question separately.

Enter your course and turn Edit mode on.

Turn Editing On button is found in the top-right corner of a Moodle page you have permission to modify content for.

Scroll to where you want to add the Quiz activity.

Click the plus symbol to access the Add content drop-down menu.

NOTE: If you want to add between two existing activities or resources you will need to hover over the dashed line to have the Add content link appear.

Select Activity or resource option from the drop down.

Select Quiz from the Activity Chooser.

Set up the basics for your quiz under the General section:

  • Set the quiz Name.
  • Enter Description: Give a general explanation of the quiz. May choose to display on course page by using the checkbox below.

Expand and populate the Timing section:

  • Open the quiz: If enable is checked and a date and time (24-hour) is set then this will prevent attempts from occurring before this time.
  • Close the quiz: If enable is checked and this date and time (24-hour) are set then no attempts will be accepted after that point
  • Time limit: If enable is checked and time is set then the student will need to submit the quiz attempt before it expires.

NOTE: If you receive a student accommodation for extended test time you will need to override the time limit setting for that student.

Expand and populate the Grade section:

  • Attempts allowed: Select the number of attempts that you would like to give students from this drop-down menu. It is set to Unlimited by default.

NOTE: Verify the Grading method setting if the attempts allowed is greater than 1.

Make any other changes desired on this page.

Scroll to the bottom of this page.

Click the Save changes button.

Add specific questions or random questions from the question bank.

Organize questions in your quiz:

NOTE: If possible, organize your quiz questions so students do not stay on a quiz page for more than 5 minutes. This minimizes the chance of data-loss in case there are technical issues during a quiz attempt.

Determine the point values for the quiz:

NOTE: The Maximum grade does not need to be the same as the Total of points.

Some question types such as multiple choice and true/false will be graded automatically. For those that aren’t or for when you need to override a grade, you can manually grade quiz questions.

Students (and instructors!) can practice taking a Moodle Quiz in the Moodle 101 Self-Guided Orientation.

Sometimes the DRC will require you provide a student extra time, number of attempts, for your quizzes. You can also grant special access to an individual student or Add student(s) to a group for unlimited quiz time access per attempt.

Make sure to check or reset an old quiz passwords.

Remove unused questions from your quiz.

NOTE: If the question was added to a course question bank it will still exist for future use, but if you added the question directly to a quiz and you remove the quiz you will not be able to access the question in the future.

Should students suffer a technical issue during the attempt you can remove an quiz attempt for one or more people so they may try again or you can just give them additional attempts.

Student’s can’t see their Quiz Grades? Make sure the quiz is visible (in both the course and gradebook) and that Points are checked under Review Options.
